Almond milk matcha latte.

Drumroll please… I finally have a vegan matcha latte recipe for you!

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of matcha powder. That vibrant green color feels so zen! Ever since reducing my caffeine intake years ago, making a cup of matcha with creamy almond milk has become my favorite morning ritual.

Whether you’re already a matcha fan or just a little curious, let’s take a walk down the green brick road together, dear reader, and become matcha buddies. Here’s the bamboo scoop!

💚 Culinary Grade vs Ceremonial Grade

Matcha, btw, is finely ground green tea powder made from specially grown and processed Camellia Sinensis leaves. When first getting to know matcha powder, it can be a little intimidating deciding on which grade to buy. Rest assured, they both come from the same plant, but there are a few differences:

culinary and ceremonial matcha powder on spoons

Culinary Grade

  • Made from slightly older tea leaves

  • Darker green with a stronger, slightly bitter, earthy taste

  • Best for lattes, smoothies, baked goods, and cooking

  • Price friendly

Ceremonial Grade

  • Highest quality, made from youngest tea leaves

  • Bright, vibrant green color

  • Smooth, delicate, slightly sweet flavor

  • Used in Japanese tea ceremonies & high-quality matcha drinks

  • Can be expensive

In my tea cabinet, I have a big bag of culinary grade and a tiny pot of ceremonial grade. You can guess which one gets used most often. Culinary grade is just perfect for your daily cup of matcha!

✅ Equipment You’ll Need

Once you see how easy it is to make your own matcha lattes, you’ll pass by Starbucks with a knowing smile on your face!

equipment for matcha latte

Electric milk frother- These are inexpensive and easily sourced online or at your local general store. You can find ones that are rechargeable or use batteries. They come in full size and mini for travel.

8-10 oz mug- A small mug works best for this 6 oz. recipe. For a 12 oz latte, you’ll want a full-sized mug.

🔖 Simple Ingredients

You’ll find the complete ingredient list with measurements and instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

ingredients for matcha latte

Pure green matcha powder- This is the tea part of the latte and what gives the drink its distinctively green color and flavor.

Hot water- Use water that is just off boil (190°F - 205°F). This temperature prevents the matcha powder from getting scorched or bitter.

Almond milk- This ingredient is the latte part of the drink. It makes up the majority of the beverage, so choose a creamy plant-based milk you really love. (almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, cashew milk)

Sweetener- Totally optional, but nice if you enjoy a little sweetness. Choose a liquid sweetener such as simple syrup, agave, or maple syrup.

🍵 How to Make an Almond Milk Matcha Latte (with step-by-step instructions)

When you’re ready to make this recipe, scroll down to the recipe card at the end of this post. You’ll find the complete ingredient list with measurements there.

1.     Scoop 1 teaspoon of matcha into an 8-10 oz mug.

2.     Pour in ¼ cup of hot water. Use an electric milk frother to whiz the matcha into a dark green froth.

3.     Add the almond milk and (optional) sweetener to a microwave-safe measuring cup. Heat the liquid in the microwave until very warm but not so hot that it will burn your mouth. Or heat it in a small pot on the stovetop. Use a milk frother to whisk the liquid until it just begins to foam. *See note if you don’t have a milk frother.

4.     Pour the warm almond milk over the matcha, scooping any foam still clinging to the cup for a nice foamy top. Enjoy!

Note:

If you don’t have a milk frother, place the milk and (optional) sweetener in a glass jar. Heat the liquid in the microwave until very warm but not so hot it will burn your mouth. Or heat it in a small pot on the stovetop and then transfer the vegan milk to a glass jar. Secure the lid and shake vigorously until light and foamy.

🫖 How to Make a Ceremonial Cup of Matcha

When my daughter, Janelle, brought back a little pot of ceremonial matcha with a matching matcha bowl and cup from Japan, I knew it was time to learn this traditional ceremony!

Here’s the equipment you’ll need and step-by-step instructions on how to make a ceremonial cup of matcha.

equipment for a ceremonial cup of matcha

1.     Scoop 1 teaspoon of ceremonial grade matcha powder into a small sifter held over a matcha bowl (chawan) or a bowl with a flat bottom. Use a small spoon or bamboo scoop (chashaku) to coax the powder through the sifter.

2.     Pour in ¼ cup (2 oz) of hot water.

3.     Use a bamboo whisk / matcha whisk (chasen) to create a vibrant green froth by whisking the liquid in a zig-zag shape back and forth for a few minutes.

4.     Pour the matcha into a cup.

5.     To make a vegan matcha latte, whisk ½ cup (4 oz) of warm plant-based milk and (optional) 1 teaspoon of liquid sweetener until slightly foamy. Pour it over the matcha, spooning the foam on top. Enjoy!

⭐️ Helpful Tips for Perfect Matcha

  1. Choose pure green matcha powder. Matcha sourced from Japan will be the highest quality. You’re looking for a deep, vibrant green color that smells fresh and grassy. It should have a fine powdery texture and be packaged in an airtight container. Steer clear if it’s brownish, stale smelling, has a coarse texture, and is sold in a clear plastic container.

  2. Use a good quality almond milk. Since half of our beverage is plant-based milk, choose one that you really love. My personal favorites are my homemade creamy almond milk, soy milk, or full-fat oat milk.

  3. Invest in a milk frother. This inexpensive kitchen gadget will become your kitchen bestie. I use it multiple times a day. Not just for making matcha, but also for whirring salad dressing and dissolving sugar in simple syrup.

And that’s all there is to it! I hope you have fun whizzing up this creamy little wonder. It has become my favorite way to welcome each new day. I have a feeling it will become yours too.

Until next time, may your cup be full and your tongue green. 💚
